My name is Lucy Sanctuary and I am a Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist, specialising in working with children and young people with Autism Spectrum Condition. I have wide experience working with children aged 2 ½ to 18, with their families and carers, and with all professionals involved with supporting a child. I work in Early Years settings, mainstream and special schools, and in the home. I currently work for the NHS, and for CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) in Dartford, and as an independent speech and language therapist in East Sussex and Kent.
In my NHS role, I assess children and young people for Autism using ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule), working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. I provide autism training to Early Years settings and schools, I am a passionate about helping children with ASC and their families, and I have spoken at several conferences about Autism (add link to conferences page)
In my private work, I work mainly with children and young people on the autism spectrum, but I am also very interested in severe speech sound disorders, e.g. developmental verbal dyspraxia and stammering, and I see children with these difficulties too. I have written, and published resources for supporting speech sound disorders.
I am a qualified Elklan Tutor. I have written and delivered bespoke training programmes for school staff who support children with speech, language and communication difficulties. I deliver training on Autism Spectrum Condition to Early Years settings and to schools. I have run a workshop for postgraduate students on supporting children with speech sound difficulties and joint working with families and schools.
I am a regular speaker at conferences and events related to autism – see the Public Speaking page.
Training and Qualifications
I trained as a Speech and Language Therapist at City University (2005-2007). Prior to this I taught English as a Foreign Language and I worked in a primary school as an Individual Needs Assistant (INA). I am currently studying for a Masters in CBT for Children and Young People, specialising in Autism Spectrum Condition, at University College, London and the Anna Freud Centre I started this course because there is a high rate of co morbid mental health conditions alongside autism, and CBT will complement my training as a speech and language therapist, enabling me to provide more targeted support.
I am trained and qualified to use many programmes and approaches in my work – for a list please visit the Services page.
If you have any concerns about your child I am always happy to discuss over the phone or by email with no obligation. If you would like to discuss bespoke workshops or training for your school, support group or university etc, please do get in touch.
